Lawrence Banks becomes the first African-American member elected to the Boston City Council.

Banks is seated only after winning his appeal of the results of the 1949 election, in which voting irregularities caused him to lose to David Sullivan by six votes. Banks serves for the remaining four months of the term, until the new nine-member, at-large council elected under the 1949 charter change takes office.
